According to historical sources name of the region “Zemplín” was derived from Castle Zemplín. It began to develop as self governing region from early 11th century.

Michalovce itself are mentioned in written records in 1244 as a city from the beginning of 15th century.

First written mention of Trebišov com from 1254 charter. At that time it was along with Parič castle property of Andronik from Trebišov.

First mention of Sobrance comes from 1409 Origin and development of the municipality is related to market activities in Tibava dominion.
